Saying NO to Yourself and How the First Week of the “Latte Factor” Went

The first week of “the Latte Factor” I feel like that needs a scary sound effect every time I say it…. like dum dum DUM!

But I feel the first week went well- I did go out for lunch but I wasn’t paying and I literally bought nothing but tokens for the subway all week (and an Iced Capp- it’s been hot) so a super win I’d say.

My savings so far:

Misc: 16.46 x 5 Days 🙂

Eating Out: 6.04 x 5 days 🙂

Total of $112.50.

This amount went to my Savings account on the weekend!

The hardest thing I learned this week is the importance of saying No to yourself. It sounds kind of strange- depriving yourself on purpose, but even though we can, doesn’t mean we should give into our every desire. Like when we were children (and if we have children) our parents always told us No when we were going down the aisles of the grocery store and wanted everything in sight.

If we say Yes to ourselves regarding every little thing we see and want that pops into our head, we get into a bad cycle of thinking about something, then obtaining that thing right away. It teaches us and solidifies instant gratification. It spoils us.

When there truly is something we need or want, it shouldn’t be an impulse. It should be calculated, thought about, saved for and truly something that would and will somehow enhance our life.

I mean, honestly, bronzers are one of the best makeup inventions, but do I really need a new one when I have 3 or 4 currently on the go and one that I know for sure isn’t even open yet… just because a new one came out and it smells like chocolate? Nevermind that it costs $30.00 CAD.

In conclusion, it is very important to discipline yourself. Saying No to yourself AT LEAST once a day will work to keep you in check.

Were you good savers this week and didn’t waste money?

  1. Awesome blogpost, awesome savings!! I’m sure you’re able to pull it through 🙂

I must admit that I spent a lot of money this week – I bought a new lens for my camera. I was thinking about it for a while now. Then I also bought a domain on wordpress but I’ve been quite frugal lately so I think it is okay. 🙂

  2. I agree, saying no to ourselves is tough. I’ve found that the things we think we want are not usually in line with what we want deep down. Right now I might want new nail polish, but deep down what I really want is more money in savings. Sounds like a good week though, congrats!

  3. I have been thinking a lot about the Latte Factor lately – for me it was (sometimes is) artisan coffees. Once I figure out the monthly dollar value of my latte factor, I wanted to quit immediately. But, like you say, sometimes saying no to ourselves is really hard. It is still a work in progress but I think I am getting much better. I have been craving a bought coffee since Saturday, so today I treated myself to a much-more-affordable Tim Horton’s and it was just (mostly) as fun!
